AI agents vs chatbots, what's actually different

The word “agent” got ruined in like 6 months. Every chatbot wrapper is calling itself an AI agent now. Every SaaS product slapped “agentic” somewhere on the landing page. Cool. Very helpful.

So let me explain what I mean when I talk about agents, because it’s genuinely different from a chatbot, and the difference matters.

A chatbot waits for you

ChatGPT is a chatbot. You type something, it responds. You close the tab, it stops existing. It has no memory between sessions (unless you toggle that on, and even then it’s shallow). It can’t do things on its own. It can’t check your email at 9am or remind you about a meeting.

It’s reactive. You push, it responds.

An agent runs in the background

An actual AI agent is a process that keeps running. It has persistent memory (files on disk, not some token window trick). It can connect to your tools. Email, calendar, messaging apps, whatever. And critically, it can do things without you asking.

My agent checks my inbox a few times a day. It monitors my calendar. It runs tasks on a schedule. I don’t have to open a chat window and type “check my email.” It just does it.

That’s the difference. Autonomy.

Why it matters

A chatbot is a tool you use. An agent is closer to a coworker. Not a perfect one (they mess up, they need guardrails, they sometimes do weird stuff at 3am). But the mental model is completely different.

With a chatbot, you think “what should I ask it?” With an agent, you think “what should I delegate to it?”

That shift changes everything about how you work.

The spectrum

It’s not binary. There’s a range:

Pure chatbot. You ask, it answers. No memory, no tools, no initiative.

Enhanced chatbot. It can call some APIs (search, code execution). Still only works when you talk to it. Most “AI agents” on the market are actually this.

Basic agent. Persistent process, memory between sessions, can connect to external tools. Responds to messages AND runs scheduled tasks.

Autonomous agent. All of the above, plus it makes decisions about what to do next. It can start tasks on its own, prioritize work, and only bug you when it needs approval.

OpenClaw sits in that last category. The agent has a heartbeat (a recurring check-in cycle), long-term memory files, and can connect to basically anything that has an API or CLI.

The catch

More autonomy means more trust required. You need to set clear boundaries. What can it do without asking? What requires your approval? What should it never touch?

That’s what SOUL.md is for. It’s the agent’s operating manual. “Here’s who you are, here’s what you can do, here’s what you absolutely cannot do.” Get that right and the autonomy becomes useful instead of scary.

So what should you actually call things

Honestly, I don’t care about labels. If it runs when you’re not looking, has real memory, and can take action on its own, call it an agent. If it only works when you’re actively chatting with it, it’s a chatbot. Both are fine. Just know what you’re getting.
